Monza is set to celebrate its 100-year anniversary at the 2022 Italian Grand Prix – when was the first race held at Monza?
The Italian GP will take place at the historical Monza circuit, near the city of Monza, north of Milan, in Italy. Built-in 1922, it was the world’s third purpose-built motor racing circuit after Brooklands and Indianapolis and the oldest in mainland Europe. The circuit’s biggest event is the Italian Grand Prix. Except for the 1980 running, the race has been hosted there since 1949.
Monza hosted its first-ever Grand Prix race on 10th September, 1922. The Italian Grand Prix is the fifth oldest national Grand Prix, after the French Grand Prix, the American Grand Prize, the Spanish Grand Prix and the Russian Grand Prix, having been held since 1921. In 2013 it became the most held Grand Prix (the 2021 edition was the 91st). It is one of the two Grand Prix (along with the British GP) which has run as an event of the Formula One World Championship Grand Prix every season, continuously since the championship was introduced in 1950.
2022 marks the 100-year anniversary of the Autodromo Nazionale Monza, the Monza Circuit, home of the Italian Grand Prix since 1949 (except for 1980 running) and one of the fastest race tracks there is. Built May to July 1922, the historic Formula 1 course near the city of Monza north of Milan is one of the oldest race tracks in the world being the third circuit after Brooklands and Indianapolis solely built for motor racing.
In the glorious history of the Italian GP, Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton are the joint most successful drivers in the history of the Italian Grand Prix. Both have won it a record five times each. Ferrari is the most successful constructor with 20 wins. Rubens Barrichello’s lap timing of 1:21.046, while driving a Ferrari F2004 in the 2004 Italian Grand Prix is the official race lap record at this GP.
