The first Formula 1 world championship constructors’ title was awarded in 1958. Let us take a look at the most sucessful F1 team of all-time
Initially, the constructors’ championship was known as the International Cup for F1 Manufacturers, and it’s adopted several names in the years since. The rules have evolved a great deal too: until 1980 only the best-placed car would contribute points to the constructors’ standings, with various rules about counting a team’s best results throughout a season. Let us now find out who are the most successful constructors’ in F1 history.
Ferrari is by far the most successful F1 team in history, becoming the first to celebrate its 1,000th race at the Tuscan Grand Prix in 2020. They have won the Constructors’ title for a record 16 times. The team won its first title back in 1961.
However, Ferrari hasn’t been able to win a title since 2008. Despite being frequent front-runners through the 2010s Ferrari has been unable to break the domination of its rivals – firstly Red Bull at the start of the decade and then Mercedes for the remainder – with five runner-up finishes in that time.
Let us now take a look at a few of the other constructors’ who are just behind Ferrari in the all-time list.
1. Williams – Williams are the second-most successful constructors’ in F1 history. They have won a total of 9 titles, with the last one coming way back in 1997.
2. McLaren – McLaren’s best spell in F1 came between 1988 and 1991, as the team won four consecutive constructors’ titles between 1988-91; the first time such a feat had been achieved in the series. They are just behind Williams with a total of 8 titles.
3. Mercedes – Mercedes are joint third in the list along with McLaren – 8 titles each. Their eighth constructor title came in 2021 and put them as the joint-third most successful F1 team in history, level with McLaren – but behind on driver titles.
