The 2022 Canadian GP is set to take place from 17-19 June at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal
F1 action resumes this weekend in Montreal. The much-awaited Canadian GP is back after two years – the 2020 and 2021 editions were canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
This is the 57th edition of the historic Grand Prix. Let us take a look at the top 5 contenders for this weekend’s race.
Hamilton has had an underwhelming season so far, by his standards. It’s high time that the 7-time World Champion turns things around. The British driver has won the Canadian GP seven times before – the joint most wins along with Michael Schumacher. Hamilton knows the circuit very well and given his record at Montreal, he is certainly one of the top contenders to finish on top of the podium on Sunday.
Mercedes’ George Russell has been one of the most consistent drivers this season. Russell is coming to Montreal at the back of a podium finish in Baku. The British driver has consistently been finishing in the top five throughout the season. Russell would aim to go all the way in Montreal and clinch his maiden race win of the season.
Perez has been one of the stand-out drivers so far this season. The Red Bull driver has finished on the podium in all of his previous three races – 2nd place at the Spanish GP, winner in Monaco, and 2nd place at the Azerbaijan GP. The Mexican driver looks in sublime touch and finds himself in second place on the current Drivers’ Championship leaderboard, just behind team-mate, Max Verstappen. Perez is certainly one of the favorites to win in Montreal.
After a stellar start to the season, Leclerc finds himself in a very rough patch, where nothing is quite going his way. Two DNFs in his last three races and Leclerc has dropped down from the top of the drivers’ championship table to third place. The Ferrari driver will be desperate for a positive result in Montreal and he is certainly capable of doing it. Leclerc is one of the contenders for a win in Montreal.
Defending champion and current Championship leader, Max Verstappen is in ominous touch. Verstappen has already sealed five wins this season – two of which have come in his last three races. With a super-efficient RB18 at his disposal to go with top form, it’s hard to look beyond Max Verstappen as the favorite for the Canadian GP.
