The Australian Grand Prix returns this weekend after a gap of two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic
The Australian Grand Prix has been a part of the F1 calendar for ages but it moved to the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne not long back, in the 1990s. Australian driver Lex Davison and F1 legend Michael Schumacher are the joint-most successful drivers in the history of the Australian GP. Davison won it four times – 1954, 1957, 1958, and 1961. Michael Schumacher has won it four times in the current venue of the Grand Prix and is the most successful driver in the modern era of the Australian GP. Schumacher has won it in 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2004.
Sebastian Vettel is the most successful driver among the ones on the starting grid this weekend. Vettel has won the Australian GP three times – 2011, 2017, and 2018. Lewis Hamilton has won it two times – 2008 and 2015.
When it comes to the constructors’, Ferrari and McLaren are clear of the rest of the pack having won the Australian GP 12 times each.
The Australian GP was last held in 2019. On that ocassion, Mercedes dominated the race with Valtteri Bottas winning it followed by team-mate Lewis Hamilton while Red Bull’s Max Verstappen occupied the third place on the podium.
Things to look forward to at the 2022 Australian Grand Prix
F1 resumes this weekend after a short break and we move on from the Middle East to Australia! Let us take a look at what’s in store for us in Melbourne. The burning topic seems to be – will Hamilton get his season back on track? The Brit is aiming for a record eighth F1 championship title after narrowly missing out last season. However, it has been an underwhelming start to the new season and some things need to change if he has to stay in the title race.
Fans are certainly loving the Leclerc-Verstappen rivalry – will we be treated to another intense duel in Melbourne? We certainly hope so.
There are lots of other aspects to look forward to including the much-awaited return of Sebastian Vettel and Mick Schumacher. Vettel’s return has been confirmed by the Aston Martin F1 team while Schumacher has recovered from the horrific crash in Jeddah and is set to be back doing what he does best!
