If you have ever wondered why Lewis Hamilton has particularly chosen 44 as his racing number – here’s everything you need to know
Lewis Hamilton has raced with the number 44 ever since drivers were forced to pick a number to race with for the duration of their F1 careers. The British driver has the luxury of using the number one but still races with the number 44. Have you ever wondered, why so? Well, there is a very interesting story behind it.
Lewis Hamilton has himself confirmed that the number 44 was on the license plate of his father, Anthony Hamilton’s car and it is the primary reason why Hamilton raced with 44. Back in 2019, Hamilton revealed: “It was my dad’s car registration number, F44, so each year it’s just a new chance to rise to the challenge.” There are other reasons as well and in Hamilton’s words, “I always start with number 44 because that’s the number that I had on my go-kart when I was eight years old.”
In fact, Hamilton also considers the number to be lucky for him and he has won six world titles in the seven years since the rule of drivers having to choose a race number was introduced.
Here’s how fans on Twitter reacted to this interesting fact about Lewis Hamilton.
“This is interesting to me! I never thought about the meaning of his number”, wrote a fan.
“Did you know Max races with number 1 because he is the reigning world champion”, joked a Verstappen fan.
“That is why Sir Lewis Hamilton is the Greatest of All Time”, wrote another fan.

“He’s loyal, that’s what”, read another tweet.
