Singapore GP 2022 is set to take place from September 30 to October 2 at the Marina Bay Street Circuit – here is why it is held at night
The Singapore Grand Prix is one of the most-awaited races in the Formula 1 calendar each year. It takes place at the Marina Bay Street Circuit and was the inaugural night race and first street circuit in Asia for F1 races. It is taking place this weekend after a gap of three years, having missed out in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic.
The primary reason behind Singapore Grand Prix taking place at night is that an Asian race could be broadcast at lunchtime in the United Kingdom. As the race is held on a street circuit, it can be properly illuminated during the evening, with demand for tickets remaining high. Moreover, the Singapore Tourism Board are also more than happy to promote their city by night.
Who are the most successful drivers at the Singapore GP?
Sebastian Vettel is the most successful driver in the history of the Singapore Grand Prix with a record five wins to his name. Ferrari and Mercedes are the joint most successful constructors with four wins each. Interestingly, Kevin Magnussen’s lap timing of 1:41.905, while driving a Haas VF-18 in the 2018 Singapore Grand Prix is the official race lap record at this GP.
Besides Vettel, there are two other drivers from the current grid who have won the Singapore GP multiple times. Lewis Hamilton has won it four times while Fernando Alonso has won it twice. Reigning F1 champion and current leader Max Verstappen is surprisingly yet to win this Grand Prix.
