Formula One’s popularity in America has received a massive boost in recent years – Will F1 overtake NASCAR in the USA?
American racing driver Logan Sargeant believes that F1 will soon overtake NASCAR as America’s favourite motorsport. Sargeant is set to be the first American driver in the F1 grid since 2005 when he takes the track in Bahrain next month. America’s interest in F1 is expected to be immense next year thanks to Sargeant and viewership will increase with the addition of the Las Vegas Grand Prix to the F1 calendar.
F1 has enjoyed a surge in popularity since it was bought by American media group Liberty Media six years ago. “F1 in America is clearly at its peak and it’s still on the way up, which is a massive positive. You can see how many questions from friends and family and how curious people are about the sport and it does show how much it’s growing in America”, says Sargeant, who is set to make his F1 debut next month. He further added: “It’s a completely different world now in terms of America. Everyone knows what Formula 1 is now over there. It’s nice to see the transition and hopefully it keeps growing.”
Logan Sargeant is set to make his F1 debut next month after being roped in by Williams. He will become the first American racer in F1 since Alexander Rossi in 2015. Sargeant will be seen in action for the Williams F1 team in place of Nicholas Latifi. Sargeant drove for Williams in FP1 at the US Grand Prix and will now be the team’s full-time driver from the 2023 season onwards.
Sargeant has been a part of the Williams Driver Academy for a long time and competed in Formula 2 with Carlin last season. Sargeant finished fourth in the 2022 F2 championship and earned the much needed FIA superlicence. Logan made his FIA Formula 2 Championship debut in 2019 with HWA Racelab. His breakthrough season came in 2022 after he was roped in by Carlin alongside Liam Lawson. At the feature race of the British Grand Prix, he became the first American driver to win a Formula 2 race. Sargeant won the feature race at the F2 Austrian GP in the very next week.
