The Spanish GP is scheduled to take place on 20th to 22nd May at Circuit de Barcelona, Catalunya
Lewis Hamilton is the defending Spanish GP champion and also the most successful driver on the grid having won the Grand Prix six times – joint highest with Michael Schumacher. However, Lewis Hamilton is going through a rough patch and the F1 2022 season so far has been very disappointing for his standards. The British driver hasn’t been at his best this season and finds himself in 6th place earning 36 points in the Drivers’ Championship.
Lewis Hamilton was tipped as the favourite to win the 2022 F1 World Championship but as things stand after five races, Hamilton finds himself low down in sixth place in the drivers’ championship leaderboard. Hamilton’s team Mercedes have had no better fortunes and occupy third place in the constructors’ championship, way behind the run-away teams Ferrari and Red Bull. After a third-place finish in Bahrain, Hamilton has failed to make it to the podium in the next four races, registering P10, P4, P13 and P6 finishes in Jeddah, Melbourne, Imola and Miami respectively.
Hamilton fans will be hoping that things get back on track starting with the Spanish GP – an event, Hamilton has dominated over the last six years. It is certainly going to be a tough ask given the form Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen are in but one can certainly not rule out the 7-time World Champion.
How did things turn out for Lewis Hamilton in the last edition of the Spanish GP?
In 2021, pole position holder Lewis Hamilton took a sixth consecutive Spanish Grand Prix victory in 2021 as Mercedes won a strategic battle with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.
In qualifying, Lewis Hamilton made history as he became the first driver to secure 100 pole positions in Formula 1.
In the main race, Hamilton made the race-winning move at the start of Lap 60 and went on to claim a sixth consecutive win in Spain. There were mixed fortunes for the home-favourite Spanish drivers. Carlos Sainz finished in seventh place, while Fernando Alonso finished a lap down in seventeenth.
