Mick Schumacher has joined Mercedes F1 team as a reserve driver for the 2023 season

Schumacher – Mercedes is one of the most iconic partnerships in F1 history and it is set to be re-ignited as Mick Schumacher has joined the team in a reserve role for 2023. Schumacher was sacked by Haas and got replaced by Nico Hulkenberg, leaving him without a full-time F1 seat for 2023. Schumacher will attend all Grands Prix in 2023 in his role as reserve driver and will be ready to step in and replace Lewis Hamilton or George Russell if either driver misses a race for whatever reason.

Schumacher’s time on the F1 seat will certainly be compromised but he should look at this as a golden opportunity to perform well and earn back his full-time seat. He will be hoping to emulate the recent success of Alex Albon who, after losing his seat with Red Bull at the conclusion of 2020, impressed sufficiently in his reserve role in 2021 to secure a full-time F1 return in 2022. In his role as a reserve driver, Schumacher will also work regularly in the simulator for the continuous development of the Mercedes W14.

Mick Schumacher was replaced at Haas by Nico Hulkenberg

Schumacher was left without an F1 seat couple of months back after Haas roped in Nico Hulkenberg to replace him. Schumacher had a pretty disappointing 2022 season and that was a chief reason behind his removal. Hulkenberg will now partner Kevin Magnussen in the grid next season. Magnussen, who replaced Mazepin at the start of this year following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, was pretty impressive last season.

Schumacher had earlier expressed his utter disappointment after being left out by Haas. In his official statement, Schumacher said: “I don’t want to hide the fact I am very disappointed about the decision not to renew our contract. Nevertheless I would like to thank Haas and Ferrari for giving me this opportunity.” However, it is now time for Schumacher to make a fresh start and earn his seat back.
