Carlos Sainz has signed a pre-contract with Audi F1 – here’s everything you need to know what it is

In Formula 1, a pre-contract refers to an informal agreement or understanding between a driver and a team before an official contract is signed. It’s a common practice in the world of motorsport, allowing teams to secure their preferred driver choices for the upcoming season or seasons.

A pre-contract typically outlines the key terms and conditions of the future contract, such as salary, sponsorship agreements, performance bonuses, and other relevant details.

While a pre-contract is not legally binding, it serves as a commitment between both parties and sets the groundwork for the official contract negotiations. It’s a strategic move for both teams and drivers to ensure a smooth transition and planning for the racing season ahead.

However, it’s essential to note that until the official contract is signed, either party could still opt out or make changes to the agreement.

Carlos Sainz has initiated the process of departing from Ferrari when his ongoing contract concludes at the conclusion of the 2024 season. He has entered into a preliminary agreement with Audi, as Audi is gradually assuming control over the Sauber team with plans to transform it into a full-fledged factory team starting in 2026.

Despite the fact that both of Ferrari’s current drivers are bound by contracts until the end of the following year, Team Principal Frédéric Vasseur has stated that addressing the drivers’ contracts is not an immediate priority. While it’s still early in the season and about four months remain until its conclusion, Sainz acknowledged that once the F1 championship wraps up, he will focus entirely on shaping his upcoming endeavors.

Although the driver hailing from Madrid has maintained his belief in the Ferrari project, sources have revealed that he has already entered into a preliminary agreement with Audi. While such agreements are not legally binding, pre-contracts are common in Formula 1, and Ferrari has a history of securing commitments from three to four drivers for upcoming years, ensuring their availability if required.

This suggests that the Spaniard is contemplating other options. Given Carlos Sainz Sr.’s strong ties with Audi, he possesses intimate knowledge of the key individuals within the company’s motorsport structure and has insider insights about their Formula 1 endeavors. Despite the potential for a new contract with Ferrari not being ruled out, its likelihood may depend on the progress of the Scuderia over the next four months.
