As we head to this weekend’s Canadian GP, here’s a recap of the 2022 edition of the Canadian Grand Prix

The 2023 F1 season has got off to a sensational start and we are now all set for a resumption in action following a 14-day gap. F1 teams will head out to Canada for the 58th edition of the Canadian Grand Prix, scheduled to take place from 16th June to 18th June.

The Canadian GP will take place at the iconic Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal. Let us take a look at how things turned out in the previous edition (2022) of the Canadian Grand Prix.

Max Verstappen

The 2022 Canadian GP was the first edition of this race in the post-pandemic era. F1 returned to Montreal after a break of two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The race was a memorable one as Max Verstappen cruised to victory while Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton occupied the second and third places on the podium respectively.

Verstappen dominated the race weekend and converted his pole position into a well-deserved victory. It turned out to be a disappointing race for big names like Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez though. Leclerc finished outside the podium in fifth place while Sergio Perez registered an unfortunate DNF beside his name. Mercedes accumulated the most points from this race as Lewis Hamilton (3rd) and George Russell (4th) had great outings.

Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is located in the city of Montreal which is a part of Quebec. Quebec is the Canadian province which has been severely impacted by the wildfires but thankfully the circuit is quite far away from the specific areas which have been affected by the wildfires. The circuit is located in Notre Dame Island in Montreal and has been the home of the Canadian Grand Prix in the modern era.

Canada and the nearby regions in North America have been severely impacted by wildfires in Quebec. A major portion of the population in America and Canada are under air quality warnings and local residents have been asked to remain indoors as much as possible.

The current conditions have already led to the cancellation of three big New York theater productions and two Major League Baseball games. However, F1 has issued an official statement confirming that the risk of cancellation is ‘low’ at the moment.
