As we approach closer to this weekend’s Dutch GP, let us take a look at who won the last edition of the Grand Prix
The 2022 Dutch Grand Prix took place at Circuit Zandvoort in Zandvoort, the Netherlands on September 4. The race covered 72 laps and marked the 34th edition of the Dutch Grand Prix.
It was also the 32nd occurrence of the event within the Formula One World Championship, and the 32nd World Championship race held at Circuit Zandvoort. Max Verstappen, the home favorite racing for Red Bull, secured first place, with George Russell and Charles Leclerc following behind in second and third places respectively.
After the race, a conspiracy theory emerged alleging that Red Bull Racing strategist Hannah Schmitz collaborated with sister team AlphaTauri to secure a favorable outcome for Verstappen. This theory was prompted by doubts raised about Tsunoda’s retirement on lap 47, which conveniently allowed Verstappen to make a pit stop during a virtual safety car period with minimal time loss.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff’s post-race comments added to the suspicion, as he openly expressed concerns about the circumstances of Tsunoda’s retirement. Wolff mentioned that he was left “speechless” by the incident and indicated that he might have scrutinized the incident more closely if his driver, Lewis Hamilton, had been a more viable contender for the drivers championship.
Where do things stand ahead of this weekend’s Dutch GP?
Red Bull maintains its stronghold on the drivers’ championship as the racing action recommences after the summer hiatus.
The team has enjoyed a remarkable start to the season, achieving impressive 1-2 finishes in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Miami, Azerbaijan, and Belgium, along with securing victories at the top of the podium in eight consecutive races.
Verstappen currently holds the leading position in the standings with 314 points, followed by his teammate Sergio Perez in second place with 189 points. Occupying the third position is Fernando Alonso from Aston Martin, who has amassed 149 points. Notably, he is ahead of competitors such as Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc, and George Russell.
The scenario remains consistent in the constructors’ championship as well. Red Bull, the reigning champions, have established a commanding lead with a total of 503 points prior to the summer hiatus. In second place, Mercedes trails significantly with 247 points to their name. Aston Martin secures the third position on the leaderboard with a tally of 196 points. Ferrari closely follows in the fourth position, accumulating 191 points.
