Nick Kyrgios’ season seems to get better with every passing day. After reaching his first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon, the 27-year-old has progressed to the round of 16 at Flushing Meadows for the first time in his career.
The Citi Open champion defeated compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis and Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi in the first couple of matches to set up a clash with J.J. Wolf in the third round. The 23-year-old was facing an uphill task as Kyrgios has been impeccable in the last few tournaments he has played.
On expected lines, the in-form Australian star outplayed J.J. Wolf to win in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, 6-3. Kyrgios hit as many as 21 aces and dominated proceedings with 91 points won and a win percentage of 77 on the first serve.
The match ended in 1 hour and 55 minutes at the Louis Armstrong Stadium. By virtue of the win, Kyrgios will face World No. 1, Daniil Medvedev, in the round of 16, in what promises to be a mouth-watering affair.
The defending champion has won all his three matches till now in straight sets. He started off with a dominating win against Stefan Kozlov before outplaying Arthur Rinderknech and Wu Yibing in the next two rounds.
