The former World No. 5 Eugenie Bouchard returned to action after being sidelined for 17 months as she recovered from right shoulder surgery.
She played in both the singles and doubles events at the Odlum Brown VanOpen. Eugenie Bouchard teamed up with fellow Canadian Kayla Cross and defeated Italian duo Lucia Bronzetti and Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the first round of the doubles event. Bouchard and Kross suffered a defeat in straight sets in the next round against Asia Muhammad and Miyu Kato.
In the singles event, Bouchard lost in her first-round match against Arianne Hartono in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
The goal of surgery and coming back is to be able to play exactly how I want to and how I was playing before,” the 28-year-old said on Monday.
“This is what we do as athletes. The point is not to practice all the time, the point is to play.”
Bouchard had last played in the Monterrey Open in March 2021 where she suffered an injury to her right shoulder during her first-round match against Zhu Lin.
At the 2014 Wimbledon Championships, she became the first Canadian-born player representing Canada to reach the final of a Grand Slam tournament in singles. She has also reached the semifinals of the 2014 French Open and 2014 Australian Open. On the junior circuit, Bouchard won the 2012 Wimbledon girls’ title.
