The legendary Venus Williams received a wild-card entry for the upcoming US Open Grand Slam which begins on August 29.
Her younger sister Serena Williams recently announced that she will be retiring soon. Venus is 42 years old and made her return to the singles competition at the Citi Open in Washington, D.C. She was ousted in the first round by Rebecca Marino. The 7-time Grand Slam champion failed to get past the first round in both the Canadian Open and the Cincinnati Masters.
Now, Venus is among the eight women who have received wildcards into the 2022 US Open women’s singles main draw. 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin has also received the direct entry.
Williams was sidelined with injury for almost a year before returning to play mixed doubles at Wimbledon in July alongside Jamie Murray. They were ousted in the round of 16.

Venus Williams will be making her 23rd US Open main draw appearance. She won the US Open singles events in 2000 and 2001. However, a section of fans believes that Venus will be taking the spot of a more deserving youngster. They expressed their agitation through tweets and some of them have been attached below:
Venus Williams has also won the women’s doubles events at Flushing Meadows on two occasions. The first time she won was in 1999 alongside her sister Serena Williams. Ten years later in 2009, she once again went the distance alongside Serena.
