Everton must hold on to Idrissa Gana Gueye at all costs

According to the Sun, French giants Paris Saint-Germain are desperate to add a new holding midfielder to their squad to cover for the departure of Adrien Rabiot and they have set their sights on Everton’s Senegalese international midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye.

The same report that the Ligue 1 leaders are also interested in securing the services of Fabinho on a loan deal. However, the Brazilian has played the full 90 minutes in six of Liverpool’s last 8 league games and the Reds are highly unlikely to sell one of their mega-money summer recruits to a Champions League rival.

French source L’Equipe claims that PSG have already held talks with the representatives of Idrissa Gana Gueye and a move in January might well be on the cards.

The 29-year-old Senegalese ace has played a key role for the Toffees in central midfield this season. Along with playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson and winger Richarlison, Gana Gueye has been one of the standout performers for Marco Silva’s side. Along with Barcelona loanee Andre Gomes, he has formed a formidable pairing in the middle of the park, leading Everton’s resurgence in the Premier League after a lukewarm start.

Barring a few average displays, Gana Gueye has not only been spot on with his passing and distribution but has added a lot to midfield with his energy and tenacity. The 29-year-old has played in a box-to-box and has cut out the attacks from the midfield with important tackles and interceptions.

As a matter of fact, Gana Gueye has averaged 53.7 passes per game with an accuracy percentage of 85.3, including 2.7 successful long balls per game. Furthermore, he has registered 4.4 tackles and 2.2 interceptions per game, figures which speak volumes of his all-around abilities as a central midfielder.

The 29-year-old has worked really well in tandems with Gomes in the heart of the midfield. Everton do not have another top-quality central midfielder in their ranks to partner the Portuguese star. Morgan Schneiderlin has fallen out of favour after a poor start to the season while Tom Davies hasn’t had the backing of Marco Silva either.

Irrespective of what the future holds for Andre Gomes, Gana Gueye continues to be a reliable presence in the midfield at Goodison Park. In all honesty, the Toffees just cannot afford to lose their star performer midway through the season as it would deal a huge blow to their chances of securing a Europa League spot next season.

PSG have the financial resources to snap up top quality players but the French cannot spend much in January to comply with the Financial Fair Play standards. Hence, slapping a huge price tag on Gana Gueye should be the way forward for the Toffees.
