Why Bas Dost could be the ideal back-up for Harry Kane at Tottenham

Tottenham’s search for Harry Kane’s backup has led them to Eintracht Frankfurt’s Bas Dost (source – Daily Mail). Jose Mourinho is keen to add to his strike arsenal after his team’s loss against Everton in the opening week of the Premier League.

He feels that a player like Dost can be a good target man to change the tactics and can also be a good backup for Harry Kane.

Profile

Bas Dost is a 31-year-old Dutch striker who plays for Eintracht Frankfurt. He started his youth career way back in 1995 at CVV Germanicus Coevorden and moved to FC Emmen in 2001.

In 2007, he was promoted to the senior side and went on to make 23 appearances for FC Emmen. A year later, he was sold to Heracles Almelo and managed some decent numbers for the Eredivisie side.

However, it was at SC Heerenveen that he exploded onto the scene. In 73 appearances, he scored a mind-boggling 52 goals and provided 10 assists (source – Transfermarkt). He moved to Wolfsburg in 2012 and in five seasons, he kept producing good numbers in front of goal.

Yet, it was at Sporting Lisbon that Bas Dost surpassed all expectations and slammed goals left, right and centre. In 127 games for Sporting, he scored a whopping 93 goals and provided 15 assists.

Verdict

Bas Dost represents the perfect backup option for Kane. Eintracht Frankfurt are expecting a transfer fee of around £5.5million, which is very nominal for a player of his age.

This would be a shrewd move on Spurs’ part given the transfer fee and Dost’s ability to get goals and change the game.
