Matthijs De Ligt

Tottenham Hotspur have been a fascinating side to watch over the last few years, yet they have not been able to lift a trophy in that time. Mauricio Pochettino has certainly changed the Spurs side into a force to be reckoned with.

In Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen, Tottenham possess one of the most feared and sought-after front line. The Lilywhites finished in third place behind champions Manchester City and runners-up Manchester United, amassing a total of 77 points. Over 38 games, Spurs scored 74 goals and conceded 36 times.

Pochettino. who will now be thinking about the new Premier League season, will be keen to make a few additions to the squad. With age catching up with veteran defender Jan Vertonghen, the Argentine coach will need reinforcements in the centre-back department. One such name that has surfaced in recent speculation is that of Dutch centre-back Matthijs De Ligt.

De Ligt, 18, is considered a potential star in the making and is coming off an excellent season with Ajax. However, he would not come cheap as it is believed that Spurs would have to surpass the club-record £42m they paid the Dutch giants for Davinson Sanchez last summer.

But Pochettino is on the lookout for a new defender as Toby Alderweireld looks set to leave White Hart Lane, with Manchester United interested in him.

De Ligt made 33 appearances in the Eredivisie last season, scoring 3 goals and providing 2 assists, besides proving stability to his side’s defence. The centre-back averaged 1.7 interceptions and 4.4 clearances per game. He could be part of a formidable defence at Tottenham with the likes of Davinson Sanchez, Kieran Trippier and Ben Davies.

The defender is also comfortable playing on either side of the defence, thus making him the perfect partner for Sanchez. Together, the Dutch centre-back and the Colombian defender could form a solid and formidable partnership at the heart of the defence.

De Ligt could also be part of a three-man defence with Vertonghen and Sanchez. The youngster’s versatility could come in handy for Tottenham, who would be desperate for silverware next term.

Pochettino has brought this Tottenham Hotspur side too far to give up now. They have now finished in the top four for the past three seasons.

His future at the club may be uncertain, following the departure of Zinedine Zidane from Real Madrid. The Argentine has been a rumoured target for the Spanish giants, but for now, he’s still the manager of Tottenham and should be looking to bolster his Spurs team.
