Wolves should hold on to Romain Saiss amidst interest from Atletico
According to the Birmingham Mail, Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Romain Saiss has attracted interest from La Liga giants Atletico Madrid and the Spanish outfit might come up with an offer in the summer.
The 28-year-old Moroccan international joined Wolves from French Ligue 1 side Angers in 2016 and has made a total of 86 appearances. He was one of the first names on the team sheet last season in the Championship where he helped his team secure automatic promotion by winning the title. Saiss made 42 appearances for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side as Wolves made it back to the top flight following a six-year absence.
However, the Moroccan has slipped down the pecking order at Molineux this term in the Premier League, with Nuno Santo preferring the midfield pairing of Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho. Belgian international Leander Dendoncker has been used alongside Neves and Moutinho in recent weeks to add more steel to the midfield while Saiss has filled in admirably at centre-back during Willy Boly’s three-game suspension.
Saiss’s involvement has been limited to a somewhat bit-part role in the first-team, with the 28-year-old starting 8 games in the Premier League. However, he has shown the same level of commitment on the pitch as he did last season, scoring the equalizer on Boxing Day to rescue a point away at Fulham. The Moroccan also scored a goal and put in a wonderful performance as Wolves beat West Ham 3-0 towards the end of January.
Wolves have taken the Premier League by storm on their return to top flight and Nuno Espirito Santo’s men currently sit 7th in the standings. As things stand, they have a real chance of securing the final Europa League qualification spot if they can finish the season on a high.
Having made a wonderful return to the top flight, Wolves need to look forward to better things and to do that, they need to build a good enough squad capable of competing on all fronts. They have taken a step in the right direction by signing Jonny Otto Castro permanently in January and, while making Raul Jimenez’s stay permanent remains a top priority for Wolves, they should also keep hold of the other utility players in their squad.
And Romain Saiss is certainly one of them. Known for his high work rate and tough-tackling nature as a defensive midfielder, the Moroccan can also fill in at centre-back. Such versatility can be a huge asset to any team in the Premier League and the 28-year-old still has plenty of years remaining in his prime.

Hence, they should not make the mistake of letting one of their all-action midfielders head for the exit door as he is still an important part of the first-team squad.
