Chelsea Opinion: Blues must groom Christensen to be the next David Luiz

According to a recent report by the Evening Standard, Chelsea’s Danish international centre-half Andreas Christensen has recently come out and stated publicly that he is happy in London and that he wishes to stay here for the near future.

This will certainly come as massive news to Chelsea fans all around the world because of Antonio Rudiger’s meniscus injury.

The German international isn’t expected to return to first-team action until September and although they will have the added muscle of Kurt Zouma returning from his loan spell at Everton, Christensen’s presence will be an added assurance at the back.

His displays along the back end of the Blues European campaign were nothing short of spectacular as they fought their way through a couple of unforgiving matches of football.

He has stated that he is satisfied with the playing time he is currently getting (h/t Evening Standard) and with Rudiger out, the Dane would certainly be the top dog to take his role.

He also expressed his happiness their European run which ended in a thrilling 4-1 defeat Arsenal in the Europa League final. David Luiz has recently signed a new deal which means that the Brazilian’s place in the side is secure.

There were rumours floating around about a move away for the Danish international back in the winter transfer period but nothing really took shape.

Signed from Brondby as a teenager, the 23-year-old has had to work hard to get to this position. He made his way up the ranks at Stamford Bridge with apparent ease but still hasn’t found his way into the regular playing side.

His loan spell at Borussia Monchengladbach developed him into quite a leader at the back and despite being so young, he has an excellent voice and the ability to take charge of a situation.

Tall in stature, the Dane is a colossal presence in either box and he also reads play very well. Adept at stepping forward at the right moment to work the offside trap, the youngster tends to show blistering pace while chasing back as well.

His contributions to the Blues side over the last couple of seasons have certainly been vital and keeping him has to be one of the priorities at Stamford Bridge next season.
