Forget it Pellegrini – West Ham United would commit their biggest blunder by signing this out-of-favour Italian and here is why

Why West Ham should ignore Inter Milan star Antonio Candreva

Despite spending a huge sum of money during the summer transfer window, West Ham United and Manuel Pellegrini are still unhappy with the squad.

The Hammers currently sit 10th and are three points behind seventh-placed Leicester City, having won just two out of their last five Premier League fixtures. This includes a 2-0 loss to Burnley and Watford, causing the fans to ask the club to add more.

Calciomercato has revealed that West Ham are chasing after Inter Milan star Antonio Candreva but that is bad news for both sides. The 31-year-old Italian has been a consistent figure at San Siro ever since his debut but it’s no reason as to why the Hammers need to buy the Inter Milan man.

West Ham have spent heavily but they also made sure they spent the money in the right areas, adding Felipe Anderson, Issa Diop and Andriy Yarmolenko among others. However, with Yarmolenko out injured for at least another few months, as per the Independent, Candreva can be deemed a replacement.

While he most certainly can, at 31, the Inter Milan man would be a short-term option. Thus, he isn’t someone worth spending money on. If West Ham had targeted him four or even five years ago, the Hammers fans would have been overjoyed to watch the classy winger don their colours.

However, now with Candreva struggling to nail a spot down in Luciano Spaletti’s squad and making 7 out of his 12 appearances off the bench, it’s a complicated choice, to say the least. For West Ham, that choice is not an option, especially with the squad that Pellegrini has at his disposal.

Bringing up Grady Diangana from the U23’s was a brilliant decision. That combined with Robert Snodgrass’ work ethic has helped replace Yarmolenko.

Not to mention, the club also brought in Samir Nasri on a free transfer at the start of the January window. His presence provides West Ham with many options and adding another struggling 30-plus star makes no sense. Clearly, Manuel Pellegrini has a plan set in his mind with a certain set of players and more likely than not, Candreva would play second fiddle.

For someone aiming to make his comeback into the Italian squad, playing second fiddle certainly won’t help Antonio Candreva. But for West Ham United, bringing in a winger who failed to score a single goal last season in all competitions would be the bigger mistake.
