Spurs Opinion: Offloading Moussa Sissoko would be a rare Pochettino blunder
According to claims from Italian source Calciomercato, Spurs want to offload French international midfielder Moussa Sissoko in the summer, with Inter Milan interested in securing the services of the 29-year-old.
The same report adds that the Lilywhites want to cash in on one of their first-team stars in order to raise valuable funds for the summer transfer window, which in turn, would allow them to invest in other areas of the squad.
Sissoko made his move to north London from Newcastle United back in 2016 and has established himself as one of the key cogs in Mauricio Pochetitno’s midfield after his initial struggles at the club.
He started just 8 games in the Premier League his first season followed by 15 in the 2017-18 campaign but the Frenchman has really come to the fore for the Lilywhites in the Premier League this time around. Sissoko has made a total of 39 appearances for Spurs in all competitions, with 25 of those being starts in the Premier League.
Given that Sissoko has been in red-hot form for Spurs this season, the news might come as a bit of surprise to the White Hart Lane faithful.
The Frenchman was well below-par in his first two seasons but Pochettino was happy to stick around with him even when he wasn’t delivering the goods and offloading him after such a promising season would make little sense for the Lilywhites.
Spurs haven’t signed a player since January 2018 and they are in dire need of bringing in fresh faces in the summer but getting a versatile player like Sissoko off the books could prove to be catastrophic for the club.
Although he hasn’t contributed that much with goals and assists, the 29-year-old has done a terrific job in the middle of the park, holding things together with his uncompromised work rate off the ball and keeping things ticking with his impressive distribution.
Sissoko has filled in the role of Mousa Dembele at the base of midfield, playing in a box-to-box or a holding role, as opposed to a more free role that he used to enjoy at Newcastle.
That is exactly the reason why he hasn’t scored too many goals for the club. Instead, he has done a fantastic job in linking up with his teammates, contributing to the build-up play and acting as the vital link between the midfield and the forward line.
The likes of Heung-min Son, Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen have stolen much of the limelight but Sissoko has done all that Pochettino would have asked of him.
Getting another perspective on Spurs decision to offload Sissoko, selling him would help the club boost their funds significantly. That should allow Pochettino to invest in attacking options but the manager should give this move a second thought as he is already short of options in central midfield following the departure of Dembele.
Victor Wanyama has hardly played a big role due to injuries, while Eric Dier’s lack of pace and agility make him a vulnerable option at times.
Harry Winks has really come of age in this campaign and Oliver Skipp is a bright young talent but someone like Sissoko, with his tough-tackling nature and versatility to play in multiple positions, still remains a useful player.
Landing a like-for-like replacement for Sissoko or bringing in an upgrade on him would cost Spurs a sizeable amount which would be better used elsewhere.
