Why Chelsea could commit a blunder by offloading Giroud and Morata for Higuain
Chelsea are willing to sell strikers Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud to plot a move for Juventus’ Gonzalo Higuain. Both players failed to perform well upon their respective arrivals last season and new manager Maurizio Sarri is keen to offload them.
However, analyzing the situation from Chelsea’s point of view, it would be unwise for them to sell two of their assets and buy a player like Higuain, who might not suit Sarri’s system. The talented Argentine often struggles to play as the lone striker up front. Contradictorily, the Chelsea manager prefers to play a 4-3-3 system where a centre-forward must exhibit a high amount of work-rate.
Morata and Giroud deserve one more chance
It is true that Morata failed to grab attention in the Premier League upon his arrival last year, however, he has the potential to improve. The hiring of a new manager will somewhat work in the Spaniard’s favour as he must start afresh. The 25-year-old, who currently earns wages in the region of £155,000-a-week, has shown signs of promise and good movement around the box, and maybe he deserves one more chance before the jury is out on him.
Olivier Giroud came to Chelsea in January and he hasn’t had enough playing time to prove himself. Despite scoring a single goal, the Frenchman was a key figure in his country’s World Cup success. He can be the perfect plan B for Sarri if need be, similar to how the 31-year-old was with Arsenal.
Conclusion
It is understandable that Chelsea are in the market to replace their out-of-form strikers but, at the same time, both players have had less time to prove themselves. Hence, it will be a sagacious decision for Chelsea and Sarri to provide them with another chance to shine in London. Signing Higuain, who has no Premier League experience, might be a risky move which can backfire.
The rationale are pretty straight-forward and logical in this context since it will also help Sarri understand the current squad. You never know, we may see a better version of Morata under the new manager and witness his renaissance at Stamford Bridge next season.
