Rangers Opinion: Jonathan Klinsmann would be an excellent signing for the Gers

According to The Scottish Sun, Rangers are keeping close tabs on Hertha Berlin goalkeeper Jonathan Klinsmann, who is the son of former World Cup winner Jurgen Klinsmann.

The Scottish Sun understands that Rangers had scouts in attendance to keep an eye on Klinsmann in Hertha’s 2-0 defeat to Lokomotiv Leipzig in the German fourth tier. The 22-year-old is out of contract this summer and is unwilling to put pen to paper on a new deal due to lack of first-team opportunities.

A youth product of Hertha Berlin, Klinsmann has featured largely for the club’s reserve side till now, with his only senior appearance coming in the German outfit’s Europa League tie against Swedish club Ostersund back in December 2017.

Rated highly at the youth level, the United States youngster is reportedly fed with lack of action in the Bundesliga and wants to push for a move elsewhere this summer.

Klinsmann, however, has earned plenty of plaudits for his performances between the sticks at the youth level for the United States. He guided his nation to victory at the 2017 U-20 CONCACAF Championship and was named as the best goalkeeper of the tournament in the process.

The talented youngster also participated at the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup in South Korea where he played every minute of USA’s campaign that eventually ended in the quarter-finals. He was called up to the senior team last year for a couple of friendlies, although he is yet to make an appearance.

The 6ft. 4 inches shot-stopper has shown a lot of promise early in his career and his father Jurgen stated back in January that his son is good enough to be a first-choice goalkeeper in the Bundesliga, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.

To put things into perspective, Rangers need to sign a young and promising goalkeeper this summer to provide cover and competition for Allan McGregor, with The Scottish Sun claiming that Wes Foderingham and Jak Alnwick are expected to head for the exit door at Ibrox come the end of the season.

McGregor is already 37 and in the twilight of his career, so it would be a good idea for Rangers to sign a young goalkeeper and groom him accordingly to take over the reins from the veteran in the days to come.

The departure of Foderingham and Alnwick would leave Gerrard with McGregor as the solitary option between the sticks and Rangers clearly cannot afford to take such a gamble.

The Gers have already done some smart business without spending a penny, having secured the services of Jake Hastie and Jordan Jones from Motherwell and Kilmarnock respectively on pre-contract deals.

They have also done well to sign Southampton loanee Steven Davis permanently, while the deal for Glen Kamara has proven to be a massive bargain for the Gers and an absolute masterstroke from Gerrard.

Klinsmann is highly-rated and his imminent availability on a free transfer should prompt the Gers to firm up their interest in the 22-year-old. He has all the qualities to take over as the No.1 at Ibrox in the near future and Rangers should try their best to lure him to Glasgow this summer.
