Fulham Opinion: Dwight Gayle is the perfect man to replace Mitrovic

According to a recent report from the Evening Standard, Fulham are said to be lining up a move for Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle, as they look to make a statement by returning to the Premier League in just a single season. It has been suggested that Gayle could be the key to their success in the Championship next season.

Fulham will be hopeful of adding a new striker to their ranks mainly because of the rather imminent departure of young Serbian striker Aleksandar Mitrovic. The talismanic forward was one of their only players who had any sort of impact and playing in the Championship is certainly not the right step for his future.

The report is suggesting that Premier League sides West Ham and Crystal Palace are both interested in signing the Serbian international, as they look to bolster their attacking options. With his inevitable departure now looming, Fulham must act quickly to try and plug the gaps that have started to develop because of relegation.

While Middlesbrough striker Britt Assombalonga is also being suggested as a potential target, the Cottagers will do well to keep their eyes locked on Dwight Gayle.

The Englishman has been a Championship star over his career but has never really pulled it off in the Premier League. Despite not being able to guide them to getting promoted, his exploits for West Brom this season were quite impressive.

Having brought the Baggies all the way to the playoffs, he was unable to see them off as they fell at the hands of Aston Villa.

His season was one to behold as he and former Southampton man Jay Rodriguez tore up the goalscoring charts. Gayle would be a huge addition to an already talented Fulham side.

Considering that the Cottagers boast players who can give the Englishman the right kind of support going forward, there’s no reason why he should not flourish in the Championship again.

The fact that he got 23 goals and 8 assists from 39 league games strengthen his case even further and that should be enough motivation to make a move.

His quick feet and sharp movement in the final third have always been a feature of his play and his ability to finish from tight angles is one of his strengths. His pace and experience would add a new element to the Fulham attack and manager Scott Parker must make this a priority in the summer transfer window if they hope to return to the top-flight.
