Why James Milner has been one of Liverpool’s unsung heroes over the years

Liverpool have made a number of additions to their squad over the summer. Jurgen Klopp was quick to address the key issues in his squad and he did so by bringing in the likes of Alisson Becker, Fabinho, Xherdan Shaqiri and Naby Keita. The Reds’ campaign got off to a great start as they displayed a convincing 4-0 win against West Ham United on the opening day.

Despite the fact that almost all the new signings were on the pitch, one player particularly caught the eye. And that was none other than good old James Milner. After needing 15 stitches to cover up the gash on his head, Milner started the game against the Hammers wearing a headband and playing his preferred central midfield role.

He was deployed on the right side of a three-man midfield along with Georginio Wijnaldum and new signing Naby Keita. Milner proved to be an essential member of the squad as he was running around the field like a mad dog who had lost his bone.

Not only did he excel in distributing the ball in the middle of the park, but Liverpool’s stand-in captain also put up an inspiring display going forward. It was Milner who volleyed in Mohamed Salah’s far-post ball that was tapped home by Sadio Mane. Milner was once again involved in the goals, grabbing the assist for Daniel Sturridge’s goal via a corner.

Over the years, Milner has proven to be a loyal servant for the Reds. He has played in a wide number of positions under Jurgen Klopp and has certainly proven his versatility as a utility man. In Klopp’s first season, the English midfielder was deployed as a left-back, given Alberto Moreno’s struggles at that time.

Up until then, Milner had never been fielded as a defender for the first-team. And yet, he flourished in the role and played like it was his natural role. Granted, his crosses from the left weren’t the most impressive but his defensive work was quite respectable.

Milner was also often deployed as a winger during his time at Manchester City, though his favoured position has always been in the middle. The 32-year-old doesn’t seem to be affected by his age. If anything, he is only getting better and is rarely on the sidelines due to injuries.

Over the last few years, Milner certainly hasn’t received the praise he deserves. He is undoubtedly one the Reds’ unsung heroes and the fans know it. Signing the midfielder on a free transfer was one of the best deals Liverpool have ever pulled off.
