Sheffield United Opinion: Why the Blades should go all out for Ronan Curtis?

Back in October 2018, Sheffield United were one of the clubs interested in Portsmouth star Ronan Curtis. But a move didn’t materialise in the January transfer window and the 23-year-old stayed put at Fratton Park.

Ronan Curtis’ excellent form for Portsmouth in League One has seen him earn the reputation of one of the stand-out performers of England’s third tier. He has netted 11 goals and supplied eight assists in 42 league games, guiding Portsmouth to the Football League One playoff semi-finals.

Portsmouth have performed extremely well in the League One but their main challenge will be to keep hold of their star players, with or without promotion to the Championship. Curtis is definitely one of the Pompey’s prized assets and while the club will look to keep hold of him in the summer, they’ll be helpless if a bigger club come calling.

With the summer transfer window now open, Sheffield United must rekindle their interest in Curtis.

Sheffield United snatched automatic promotion to the Premier League following a 2-0 win over Ipswich Town at Bramall Lane on the final day of the season. Chris Wilder masterminded the Blades to automatic promotion to the top-flight after a twelve-year hiatus, just two years after the team won promotion from League One.

The Yorkshire-based club certainly exceeded expectations in the Championship when finishing just behind title winners Norwich City to claim 2nd spot this term.

Now that Sheffield United will play in the Premier League in the 2019/20 campaign, it’s imperative for Chris Wilder to bring fresh faces over the summer. The addition of new players will be beneficial for the Blades, as Wilder and co. to keep their place in the Premier League next term.

One of the areas Wilder must prioritise strengthening is his attack. He needs to inject some fresh blood into his ageing attack department, which was spearheaded by Billy Sharp in the past campaign. A player like Ronan Curtis could make a huge difference at Bramall Lane.

Curtis has enjoyed a fantastic season with Portsmouth in the League One and is on the brink of earning promotion to the Championship. The young winger, who can also play up front, is a natural goalscorer who’ll reduce the burden of scoring goals from the shoulders of Billy Sharp and David McGoldrick.

The two-cap Republic of Ireland international would provide an excellent back-up as well, whilst being a lively option to have from the bench.

Verdict

Curtis has massive potential and if he was to move to Sheffield United, then the 23-year-old would have the platform required to become a star.
