“Through goes Hamilton” – a phrase used by commentator David Croft to describe Hamilton’s glorious overtake at last weekend’s British has become immensely popular among fans
The origin of David Croft’s iconic ‘Here comes Sebastian Vettel’ dates back to the 2018 Belgian GP, when Sebastian Vettel overtook Lewis Hamilton after overtaking him on the Kemmel Straight. The ‘through goes Hamilton’ phrase which has gone viral on the internet was used by Croft during last weekend’s British GP while describing Hamilton’s glorious overtake in the last quarter of the race.
On lap 39 of 52 of the race, Esteban Ocon’s mechanical problems forced a safety car. The safety car period reset Charles Leclerc’s lead and closed the pack up. The race restarted at lap 43 and that’s where the excitement began and the race gave us moments to remember the 2022 British GP for a long time. After the restart, Sainz overtook Leclerc for the lead and Perez overtook Hamilton for P3. And the incidents that followed were beautifully described by David Croft.
Croft covered the incidents of lap 45 brilliantly and made them even more exciting with his commentary. “Leclerc has that inside line. Perez goes off the track, cuts the chicane. Off goes Leclerc. Through goes Hamilton, unbelievable stuff!!” screamed Croft.
David Croft used the iconic ‘Here comes Sebastian Vettel’ phrase back in 2018 at the Belgian Grand Prix.
The race wasn’t particularly exciting but the first few laps were an absolute treat to watch. The race start was perhaps the most chaotic start at Spa since the 2012 edition but the real action didn’t take place until a few corners later.
Pole-sitter Hamilton got a good launch and led the pack through the first few sequences. As the cars headed into Eau Rouge, Vettel closely followed Hamilton through Radiilon and pulled alongside him on the Kemmel straight to take the lead.
David Croft, who was on commentary, did complete justice and captured everyone’s emotions perfectly – “But here comes Sebastian Vettel!” – an iconic phrase and F1 fans can still hear it loud and clear.
