Starting out at P20, Sergio Perez put on a stunning show to win the Dutch GP 2021 Driver of the Day
F1 returned to Zandvoort after 36 years. It was bathed in a sea of orange to witness their main man Max Verstappen. As expected, the Dutchman trumped Hamilton to emerge victorious.
Verstappen never really looked like he would concede the lead to the Mercedes frontman.
However, it was his teammate, Sergio Perez, who finished 8th, who stole the show. Following a poor showing during the qualifying, the Mexican started out from the pit lane, even behind Robert Kubica (who started ahead of him in the pit).
Known for his adventurous and exciting driving, Perez took on the pack of 19 cars ahead of him.
As the laps progressed he began taking them out, one by one, despite suffering a tyre lockup early on in the race.
In the end, he gained a whopping 12 places to finish at P8. Had there been a couple of laps more, he could have even pushed for a P6 finish.
Perez was the lone shining spot in an otherwise dull and glum race.
Sergio Perez receives 27.7% of the votes
Sergio Perez came first after receiving 27.7% of the votes. He was closely followed by Max Verstappen who received 19.4% of the votes.
Lewis Hamilton, who finished second, received 8.5% of the votes to come third in the DOTD standings.
Hamilton was closely followed by Pierre Gasly and Kubica, who finished 4th and 15th respectively.
