Here’s a look at the 2023 US Grand Prix preview, schedule, live stream details and our predictions for the race at the Circuit of the Americas
The US Grand Prix, originally named the American Grand Prize, has had a sporadic history since its inception in 1908. It eventually became a part of the Formula One World Championship. As of 2022, this prestigious event has been hosted 51 times at ten diverse venues.
Since 2012, it has found a consistent home at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, with the exception of 2020 when it was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2023 edition is planned to occur from the 20th to the 22nd of October.
In 2022, the three-day Formula One United States Grand Prix event achieved a remarkable milestone in terms of attendance. Approximately 440,000 fans flocked to the event, shattering Formula One’s previous North American attendance record of 400,000, which was set during the 2021 United States Grand Prix.
The final race on Sunday saw a crowd of over 150,000 spectators at the Circuit of the Americas, surpassing the attendance of the inaugural Formula One race at the circuit in 2012.
This surge in attendance was attributed to the growing popularity of Formula 1: Drive to Survive in the United States, as well as the accommodation of 2020 tickets, as the 2020 United States Grand Prix had to be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Located in Austin, Texas, the Circuit of the Americas holds the distinction of being the first purpose-built Formula One track in the United States. This track’s design was a collaborative effort, led by promoter Tavo Hellmund and assisted by 1993 Motorcycle World Champion Kevin Schwantz. The renowned German architect and circuit designer, Hermann Tilke, played a pivotal role in shaping the layout. Notably, Tilke has also been involved in designing circuits such as Sepang, Shanghai, Yas Marina, Istanbul, Bahrain, Yeongam, Buddh, and in reprofiling the Hockenheimring and Fuji Speedway.
The Circuit of the Americas (COTA) covers a distance of 5.513 kilometers (3.426 miles) and presents a challenging layout with 20 turns. The track is well-equipped with modern facilities, such as a spacious main grandstand, multiple luxurious hospitality suites, and its iconic observation tower that provides sweeping panoramic views of the entire circuit. Of particular note, “Turn 1” stands as an iconic hairpin turn characterized by a distinctive uphill entry, making it an exhilarating spot for overtaking opportunities.
The COTA benefits from its scenic setting in the Texas Hill Country, located just on the outskirts of Austin. This picturesque location enhances its appeal and popularity, creating a captivating backdrop for racing events. As a result, the circuit attracts not only avid racing fans but also tourists looking for a distinctive and thrilling experience. Privately owned and operated, COTA has played a significant role in elevating the profile of motorsport in the United States, establishing itself as a symbol of high-speed excitement and entertainment.
