Fox TV announced Monday they have chosen not to renew Star for its fourth season. After three successful years, ratings had decreased significantly and production costs and international sales had proved difficult for this musical drama series.
Girls Trip’s Camila Banus and Sleepy Hollow star William Levy will join Star’s cast as series regulars, joining Benjamin Bratt, Queen Latifah, Jude Demorest, Ryan Destiny, Brittany O’Grady Amiyah Scott Quincy Brown and Miss Lawrence among others.
Though Star has an avid following, its ratings were consistently below par – one factor leading to its cancellation and received with outpourings of grief from fans. Fox TV had an uphill struggle this year shedding many shows; whether or not Star will return remains unknown.
Queen Latifah stars as Queen Latifah in this musical drama which also stars Jude Demorest, Brittany O’Grady, Ryan Destiny and Amiyah Scott. It debuted in December 2016 alongside Empire as two series that shared a musical universe and featured crossovers between them; moreover it provided transgender actress Amiyah Scott an opportunity to become the first openly transgender person ever cast as a leading character on scripted television show.
Star is beloved and one of the highest-rated Fox shows. Season three averaged an 18-49 demographic rating of 1.08 with 3.58 million viewers tuning in – this represents a decrease from its performance during Season two but nonetheless represents an admirable feat.
The network recently renewed the animated favorites The Simpsons and Family Guy for another season, but an end of Star’s third season appears unlikely as its focus shifts toward scripted series owned or co-produced by them, such as lifeguard drama HI-Surf which just premiered this year.
Ratings, budgets and packed lineups play a significant role in whether or not a show is renewed or cancelled; fans often find this decision hard to bear. Whether due to low viewership numbers, limited budgets or an overwhelming choice of shows available for viewing, television networks are cutting the plug on series at an alarmingly rapid rate.
One cancellation that caused great outrage among fans was Lucifer, featuring Tom Ellis and garnering an avid following despite its early cancellation during season three. Thanks to its loyal fan base creating a #SaveLucifer campaign that ultimately led to its purchase by Netflix.
Star, another hit musical drama created and written by Lee Daniels was abruptly cancelled after two seasons. Star starred Jude Demorest, Ryan Destiny, Brittany O’Grady, Amiyah Scott as well as an array of guest stars such as Lenny Kravitz, Tyrese Gibson, Missy Elliott and Big Boi – among others.
Homeland is one of the most expensive shows on television with its production budget exceeding that of even some of its rivals. Claire Danes and Damian Lewis each enjoy large fan bases; both stars earn $3 Million for every episode shot on location – quickly accumulating. Danes and Lewis each earn $3 Million per episode which adds up quickly! The show travels widely as it shoots in multiple countries around the globe for filming purposes – further distinguishing itself as one of its kind in television history.
Lee Daniels and Tom Donaghy’s musical industry drama Star has been cancelled after three seasons. Star ran concurrently to Empire and featured an impressive cast including Queen Latifah, Brandy Norwood, Jude Demorest, Ryan Destiny, Amiyah Scott, Brittany O’Grady, Quincy Brown, Miss Lawrence Lance Gross Luke James Matthew Noszka William Levy as well as numerous guest stars such as Lenny Kravitz Naomi Campbell Tyrese Gibson Gladys Knight Paris Jackson to name just a few!
However, this series has struggled to achieve ratings success; though its first season was an overwhelming hit, subsequent seasons experienced viewership drops due to expensive production costs and limited international sales potential.
Fox continues to produce exciting shows that audiences will love. Most recently, they renewed the popular 9-1-1 spin-off for a fourth season and ordered another installment of Fox’s Got Talent; both highly-acclaimed FBI dramas.
The network also features some other newer shows, including Jared Padalecki and Coby Bell’s reimagining of Walker, Texas Ranger in an upcoming reimagination series called Walker Texas Ranger: Reborn; Call Me Kat, an unscripted competition series renewed for another season by Cheyenne Jackson’s previous statement that it would get renewed within four or five weeks;
Star is a musical drama about three talented singers trying to break into the music industry. Star stars Queen Latifah, Jude Demorest, Brittany O’Grady, Ryan Destiny, Amiyah Scott and Quincy Brown and has garnered low ratings but an avid following despite this; fans were devastated when FOX announced its cancellation.
Recently, Fox renewed 9-1-1 and The Resident with negotiations reportedly coming down to the wire – decisions were further complicated by Disney owning Fox 20th Television, who produced both shows.
However, even studios cannot save all shows: recently Fox cancelled Empire spinoff Star after three seasons as ratings for season three were low and ended on a dramatic cliffhanger. They may have hoped streaming services might pick it up; unfortunately it’s too late now.
