Freddie Freeman Career
Freddie Freeman was always a fan of the Los Angeles Angels, but his dreams of playing baseball professionally led him to a different team. He started practicing with older Little League players at the young age of six and, by the time he was nine, he was playing with 12-year-olds. Freeman attended El Modena High School, where he excelled as a third baseman and pitcher. In his senior year, he was named the player of the year by the Orange County Register, and he signed a letter of intent to play for the Cal State Fullerton Titans.
However, the Atlanta Braves saw potential in Freeman and selected him in the second round of the 2007 MLB draft. Freeman signed with the team, forgoing his college scholarship. He started his professional career with the Gulf Coast Braves and played for the Rome Braves of the Class A South Atlantic League in 2008. Freeman was named the Braves’ fifth-best prospect by Baseball America before the 2009 season.
Freeman’s talent was undeniable, and he was promoted to the Mississippi Braves of the Class AA Southern League during the 2009 season. Baseball America ranked Freeman the 11th-best prospect overall in their 2009 mid-season top 25. Despite a wrist injury in August of that year, Freeman joined the Peoria Saguaros of the Arizona Fall League. He continued his journey with the Gwinnett Braves of the Class AAA International League in 2010.
Finally, Freeman’s hard work and dedication paid off when he was called up to the Braves on September 1, 2010. He made his MLB debut that same day, and after 20 games with the team, he batted .167. Freeman was not a part of the Braves’ playoff roster that year, but he returned to the Arizona Fall League to continue his development.
In 2011, Freeman started as the Braves’ first baseman. Despite a slow start, his performance improved, and he became a strong candidate for rookie of the year. He hit two home runs against the Colorado Rockies on July 4, 2011, for his first multi-home run game. He was named NL rookie of the month for July and led all Major League rookies in hits, batting average, and on-base percentage.
Freeman’s talent and hard work continued to impress, and he received an eight-year, $135 million extension in 2014. He was named an All-Star for the second time that year and set a franchise record for innings played. In 2021, Freeman was named the National League’s starting first baseman for the All-Star Game, and he hit for the cycle against the Miami Marlins in August of that year.
Freeman’s leadership and skill helped the Braves win the 2021 World Series, making him a champion. He received his third consecutive Silver Slugger Award and his first Babe Ruth Award at the end of the season. Freeman joined Hank Aaron and Johnny Evers as the only Braves to win a World Series and an MVP award. Currently, he is on a six-year contract signed on 2022 with the Los Angeles Dodgers for a massive $ 162 million.
