Italy’s Camila Giorgi will take on local favourite Alize Cornet in the opening round of the French Open
Alize Cornet is coming to Paris after an early exit from the WTA Strasbourg tournament. The French star has had a very poor season by her standards.
She has suffered early eliminations from most of the tournaments that she has participated in this year and her age seems to have taken a toll on her. However, we can expect Cornet to bring out her A-game on home turf, especially with the advantage of having the crowd support on her side and that really makes her a dangerous opponent to face.
The 33-year-old is one of the most experienced players in the women’s circuit and she will certainly fancy her chances of going deep into the tournament. Cornet has never progressed beyond the fourth round of the French Open and she will definitely try her best to change that piece of stat. It remains to be seen if the home favourite can fly the French flag high on home soil.
Camila Giorgi’s form coming into the match
Giorgi has had a season marred by injuries and was out of action for close to a month before making a return to the Madrid Open. She made a good start to the year, winning the Merida Open in February but hasn’t been consistent enough since then. The Italian is coming into this match following an early exit on home turf – the Italian Open. She will be desperate to register some positive results and set a positive tone for the remainder of the season.

Head to head and Predictions
Cornet and Giorgi have played each other seven times before on the WTA tour. They know each other’s game very well and all the encounters were closely fought but Giorgi has earned more victories and currently leads 5-2 on head-to-head. On paper, Cornet is the clear favourite going into this match both in terms of form and rankings, but we can certainly expect the Italian to pose a tough challenge. It promises to be an intense clash and we are predicting a win for Alize Cornet in three sets.
