Home favourite Benoit Paire will take on 14th seed Cameron Norrie in the opening round of the French Open
Benoit Paire is one of the most experienced players in the main draw of the tournament and he will have the added advantage of playing on home turf. However, form hasn’t quite been on his side of late. He is coming to Paris at the back of consecutive first-round exits from the Challenger Bordeaux event and the Geneva Open.
Paire will be aiming to use his experience to turn things around and put up a good showing at the French Open. It remains to be seen if the home favourite can cause a few upsets and progress deep into the tournament.
Cameron Norrie had begun the year in an incredible fashion by finishing runners-up at the Argentina Open and then winning the Rio Open but his form has faded off recently.
The British suffered early exits in his recent few tournaments – the Madrid Open, the Barcelona Open, the Monte Carlo Masters and the Miami Open. However, he has been doing well at the ongoing Lyon Open and is scheduled to play the semi-finals later today. The British star would aim to carry forward this positive momentum to the French Open.
Norrie is seeded No.14 at the Roland Garros and there will be high expectations from him. He has never progressed beyond the third round at the French Open and would aim to improve that stat this time around. It will be interesting to see if Norrie can gain some consistency and go deep into the tournament.
Date – Sunday, 28th May
Court Type – Clay outdoor surface
Telecast – Sony Ten Network
Start Time – To be Announced
Location – Paris
Match details – First Round
Paire and Norrie have played each other twice before on the ATP tour. Norrie has emerged victorious on both occasions and thereby leads 2-0 on head to head. On paper, the British star is the favourite both in terms of form and rankings. We can certainly expect Paire to put up a tough fight on home turf but the Brit should eventually prevail. We are predicting a comfortable win in four sets for Cameron Norrie.
