Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko will take on No.13 seed Barbora Krejcikova in the first round of the French Open
Lesia Tsurenko is coming into this tournament after a third-round exit from the Italian Open. She was in decent form in Rome and registered two impressive victories in her first two matches.
She began her campaign with a comprehensive win over compatriot Elina Svitolina and then defeated 28th seed Bernarda Pera 6-4, 6-4 in an intense encounter before losing to top seed Iga Swiatek in the Round of 32. The 33-year-old will look to maintain this rhythm at the French Open and go deep into the competition.
Tsurenko’s best performance so far this season came at the Hua Hin Championships in February. She finished as runners-up but defeated multiple top seeds in the process. There is no doubt that Tsurenko can defeat much higher-ranked opponents on her day but she has to focus on bringing more consistency in her game in order to make a mark at the clay-court Grand Slam.
Barbora Krejcikova has been in decent form and has already won one WTA singles title this season – the Dubai Tennis Championships.
The Czech star is seeded 13th at the French Open but hasn’t been in the best form of late. She is coming into this tournament at the back of a second-round exit from the Italian Open.
Despite her average form, she is one of the dark horses to clinch the title in Paris if she can play her best game. However, she has to bring out her A-game right from the start as anything less could eliminate her from the competition.
Date – Tuesday, 30th May
Court Type – Clay outdoor surface
Telecast – Tennis Channel
Start Time – To be Announced
Location – Paris
Match details – First Round
Tsurenko and Krejcikova have never played each other before on the WTA tour. This is the first professional head to head clash between the two players. On paper, Krejcikova is favourite both in terms of experience and rankings. However, one can certainly not rule out the promising Ukrainian and she is expected to put up a tough fight. We are predicting an intense encounter with Barbora Krejcikova eventually prevailing in three sets.
