Canada’s Leylah Fernandez will face Clara Tauson in the second round of the French Open
Leylah Fernandez has gradually emerged as a strong doubles player but hasn’t quite been able to establish herself in singles since finishing runners-up at the US Open in 2021. She has come into this tournament following an early exit at the Morocco Open and the story has been similar throughout the season so far. The 20-year-old has no noteworthy singles performances this year and it remains to be seen if she can turn things around in Paris.
Fernandez’s drop in form in singles has been pretty rapid over the last few years and it would be foolish to expect that things would change overnight. The Canadian has to focus on being more consistent and she would be hoping that the French Open would be the platform where she can play freely to the best of her abilities. She has made a good start with a commendable victory against No.21 seed Magda Linette and will be looking to capitalise on it going forward.
Clara Tauson’s form coming into the match
Clara Tauson has been very impressive so far at the French Open. She overcame three rounds of qualifiers to make it to the main draw of the tournament. She hasn’t let the occasion get the better of her and registered a dominating 6-2, 6-2 win over Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the first round. However, the job only gets tougher from here and Tauson cannot afford to get carried away. It will be interesting to see how far the 20-year-old can progress at the clay-court Grand Slam.

Head to head and Predictions
Fernandez and Tauson have never played each other before on the WTA tour. This is the first professional head to head clash between the two players. On paper, Fernandez is the slight favourite both in terms of experience and rankings. However, one can certainly not rule out the in-form Danish youngster and she is expected to put up a tough fight. We are predicting a close match with Leylah Fernandez eventually winning in three sets.
