French Open 2023: Mayar Sherif vs Anastasia Potapova – Preview, Predictions, Head-to-head and Stats

Published by

Mayar Sherif will take on No.24 seed Anastasia Potapova in the second round of the French Open

Mayar Sherif has lacked consistency throughout the season. She had mixed results before coming to Paris – a quarter-final finish in Madrid followed by early exits in Rome and Morocco. The Egyptian will be looking to put together a string of consistent results at the French Open. She has the talent to do it but it remains to be seen if she can convert the talent into positive results.

Sherif won her opening match of the tournament against Madison Brengle of the US. It was a routine job for the third as she cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 victory against her lowly-ranked opponent. The job only gets tougher from here though and there is no room for complacency on a stage as big as the Roland Garros.

Anastasia Potapova’s form coming into the match

Anastasia Potapova is coming into this match following a comfortable 6-1, 6-2 win against Taylor Townsend of the US in her first encounter. She is seeded No.24 in the tournament and will fancy her chances in the initial rounds of the competition. Potapova has been pretty consistent on the WTA Tour and has won 1 title so far this season – the Linz Open in February. It will be interesting to see how far she can progress in Paris.

Head to head and Predictions

Sherif and Potapova have never played each other before on the WTA tour. This is the first professional head to head clash between the two players. On paper, Potapova is favourite both in terms of experience and rankings. However, one can certainly not rule out the promising Egyptian and she is expected to put up a tough fight. We are predicting a close match with Anastasia Potapova eventually winning in three sets.
