No.9 seed Taylor Fritz will face compatriot Michael Mmoh in the opening round of the French Open
Michael Mmoh has only played a handful of tournaments this season and is coming into this tournament following a two-month-long gap due to injury.
He was last seen in action at the Mexican Open in March. He has subsequently missed a number of top events like the Indian Wells Masters, the Miami Open, the Madrid Open and the Barcelona. He has not had enough game time coming into the Grand Slam and it will be challenging for him to get going straight away.
However, he did get enough time to rest and work on his weaknesses away from the court. Mmoh will look to start afresh at the French Open and set a positive tone for the remainder of the season.
Taylor Fritz is one of the higher-seeded players in the tournament and there are high expectations from him. The American star has been pretty consistent so far this season and has won 1 title – the Delray Beach Open, besides reaching the Semi-finals and finals of a number of other tournaments.
Fritz made two semi-finals recently at the Bavarian International and the Monte Carlo Masters in April, which is a great indication of how good his form has been. However, he’ll be worried that he is choking in the final stages and will be desperate to break that trend in Paris. If Fritz can play to his full potential, he can certainly challenge the big boys for the title.
The No.9 seed is currently playing at the Geneva Open and has made it through to the Semi-finals. He will arrive in Paris soon after his campaign in Switzerland is over. Fritz has been in sublime touch in Geneva and he will look to carry forward this good form to Paris for the all-important French Open.
Date – Sunday, 28th May
Court Type – Clay outdoor surface
Telecast – Sony Ten Network
Start Time – To be Announced
Location – Paris
Match details – First Round
Mmoh and Fritz have played each other once before on the ATP tour. Fritz emerged victorious on that occasion in 2016 and thereby leads 1-0 on head-to-head. On paper, the ninth is the favourite both in terms of form and rankings. We can certainly expect Mmoh to put up a tough fight, but his seeded compatriot should eventually prevail. We are predicting a comfortable win in straight sets for Taylor Fritz.
