Spain’s Rebeka Masarova will take on No.6 seed Coco Gauff in the opening round of the French Open
Rebeka Masarova is not a regular on the WTA tour but she has impressed one and all with her recent performances. She did well at the Madrid Open last month but inconsistency is a major issue with her. The Spaniard couldn’t carry forward her good form to Rome and failed to even make it to the main draw of the Italian Open.
She is coming to Paris as a complete underdog and that should help her play more freely. It remains to be seen if she can pull off a major upset in the first round itself.
Coco Gauff finished runners-up in 2022 and will be looking to go a step better this time around. She is not in the best form coming into this tournament though. The teenager is playing both singles and doubles on the WTA – doing really well in doubles but the hectic schedule seems to have affected her performances in singles. The teenager has suffered early exits from most of her recent tournaments and it remains to be seen if she can turn things around in Paris.
Gauff’s best singles performance so far this year came at the Dubai Tennis Championships back in February. She reached the semi-finals before losing to top seed Iga Swiatek. However, her form has faded off since then and there haven’t been any noteworthy singles performances. The teenager is the No.6 seed in Paris and it will be interesting to see if she can live up to the high expectations.
Date – Monday, 29th May
Court Type – Clay outdoor surface
Telecast – Tennis Channel
Start Time – To be Announced
Location – Paris
Match details – First Round
Masarova and Gauff have played each other once before on the WTA tour. Gauff emerged victorious on that occasion in Auckland earlier this year and thereby leads 1-0 on head-to-head. On paper, the sixth is the favourite both in terms of form and rankings. We can certainly expect Masarova to put up a tough fight but the American should eventually prevail. We are predicting a comfortable win in straight sets for Coco Gauff.
