Mario Andretti was born in 1940 in Istria, which used to be a part of the Kingdom of Italy but is currently in Croatia. Andretti, along with his parents Alvise and Rina and his twin brother Aldo, left their hometown in 1948 and arrived as a refugee in Lucca, Italy.

Andretti married his late wife Dee Ann on November 25, 1961. She passed away because of a heart attack in 2018. Andretti currently lives in Bushkill Township, Pennslyvania. He owns a chain of gasoline stations and a Toyota dealership in Moon Township, Pennsylvania.
