Gael Monfils has now won seven of his 10 ATP Tour trophies on indoor hard courts

French tennis player Gael Monfils attained a remarkable feat on Sunday when he achieved three career firsts at the age of 33 after the Rotterdam Open win.

Monfils’ win at Rotterdam was thus his first successful title defence in his professional career. Secondly, it was his first title-win in back-to-back tournaments (having claimed the Montpellier title a week earlier).

Third and final, it was the first time the French star won more than one title in a season, thus making it one of the best moments in his professional career. Meanwhile, tennis fans and followers took to Twitter to lavish praise upon Monfils for his outstanding achievement in recent weeks.

The following are some of the tweets following Monfils’s first-of-a-sort accomplishment in his career:

The 33-year-old Monfils, nicknamed  “La Monf”, overcame teenager Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-2, 6-4 to lift his second ATP Tour title in as many weeks. Monfils became the second player after Robin Soderling in 2011 to win consecutive titles at Rotterdam. Also, Monfils has now won seven of his 10 ATP Tour trophies on indoor hard courts.

A fourth straight final loss for Auger-Aliassime

Monfils handed 19-year old Auger-Aliassime his fourth straight final loss. Prior to this, the young Canadian had lost his finals at Rio de Janeiro, Lyon and Stuttgart respectively, back in 2019.

Auger-Aliassime was also a member of the Canadian team which lost the Davis Cup final to eventual champions Spain last year.

“Bravo Gael, I’m happy for you. It was tough for me, losing my fourth career final, but I had an amazing week,” said Auger-Aliassime.
