An emotional Garbine Muguruza thanked her team for helping her reach another Grand Slam final after she emerged runner-up losing to America’s Sofia Kenin in the final of the Australian Open.
Muguruza, who started the match on a good note winning the first set, however, appeared to lose her way finally going down 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 to the 21-year old Kenin.
Having come short at crucial junctures and knowing well that the game could still have been a turnaround, a clearly emotional Muguruza broke down when she stepped up to the microphone during the post-match speech.
Despite getting emotional, nothing held her back from thanking her team who stood by her throughout the tournament.
“I have to start by thanking my team. Because it’s an individual sport, but I’ve never been here without them. Today they have always been suffering with me. Thank you for helping me reach another ‘Grand Slam’ final together,” said Muguruza looking towards her box in the stands.
Muguruza also thanked the crowd for their energy and coming in numbers to watch players like her feature in such a big tournament.
“I have to say that it has been impressive to be here, with this environment. This track fills you with energy and I think the stand is what makes it special. Today we played for you, it is the show, so thanks for coming,” she said waving to the crowd.
With her loss, Muguruza’s elusive wait for a maiden Australian Open continued. However, this was her best display in a major since her fourth-round exit last year.
Also, it has been three years since she won a Grand Slam, the last one being Wimbledon, back in 2017 when she was the World No.1.
