Cast
Gate, the first season, was an enormously popular anime with fans eagerly awaiting its sequel. Renowned for its high production values and action sequences, it’s also based off an extremely popular light novel/manga series.
Modern Japan is home to a portal leading into another dimension populated with monsters from the Special Region and invaders from another universe called Earth. Otaku trying to save doujinshi sales have unwittingly turned JSDF Second Lieutenant Youji Itami into an accidental hero who embarks on a mission to meet and connect with its inhabitants – which leads him into meeting an elf, mage and Goth-loli who welcome him with open arms into another dimension he encounters there.
Itami becomes involved in political maneuvering as he attempts to convince Princess Pina Co Lada that the JSDF does not intend on invading their kingdom, while simultaneously fighting an army led by General Kouji Sugawara who harbors personal ambitions for himself and the rest of his army.
Producers of Gate: the anime are planning to release a third season. Director Kate Herron won’t return, with Moon Knight writers Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead taking charge of “a majority” of episodes instead. While no release date has been set, fans can enjoy Gate manga style on Crunchyroll until then.
Plot
Modern Tokyo becomes home to an alternate reality when a gateway opens into it, providing entryway into another fantasy realm. A Japanese military squad, the Japan Self Defense Force (JSDF), forms to forge links between both worlds; under Lieutenant Yoji Itami’s guidance is one formed with special forces certification and who views their purpose in life as enjoying themselves.
Ginza is under attack from an enormous army of mythological creatures and ancient soldiers, but Itami and his team arrive just in time to fend them off and are soon commended for their heroic efforts by being promoted as first lieutenants, while Lelei, Tuka, and Rory receive training opportunities with the JSDF as soldiers.
Four months later, the JSDF had established its base at Alnus Hill and Itami was trying to earn the trust of people from another world. Though their challenges proved formidable, Itami and his team eventually prevailed despite them all, even helping Princess Pina Co Lada save her village from an ancient dragon and an army of marauders.
But peace talks between the two sides aren’t going as smoothly as planned. The Emperor from another world wants to send in an army instead, but Itami convinces him it would be better for negotiation instead. Furthermore, Lord Cicero – an influential noble who supports their empire’s pro-war faction – joins Lord Itami at the negotiation table as an advocate.
Release Date
With the success of Gate: Season One behind them, producers have decided to produce Gate: Season Two. Crunchyroll will stream the anime globally, making it easily accessible for fans of anime worldwide. The first two seasons will be available immediately while season three will come out later; no announcement has been made by the production team as to a fourth season yet but fans remain hopeful!
In season two of the anime series, we will meet more characters from other worlds, along with some newcomers. Seiichirou Yamashita will return as voice actor of Cid Kagenou; previously seen voicing Cid Kagenou in Mob Psycho 100 and Raiden Shuga in 86. Additionally he can be found playing other roles such as Sagawa from Mob Psycho 100, Tao Ukegawa in Insomaniacs After School etc.
While gate is certainly a fairly typical show, what sets it apart from others is its realism. Instead of featuring huge “let’s destroy everything!” plotlines that most anime employs, Gate emphasizes showing us their everyday lives instead.
