Modern Japan is home to a portal leading into another dimension populated with monsters from the Special Region and invaders from another universe called Earth. Producers of Gate: the anime are planning to release a third season. Director Kate Herron won’t return, with Moon Knight writers Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead taking charge of “a majority” of episodes instead. While no release date has been set, fans can enjoy Gate manga style on Crunchyroll until then.

Plot

Modern Tokyo becomes home to an alternate reality when a gateway opens into it, providing entryway into another fantasy realm. A Japanese military squad, the Japan Self Defense Force (JSDF), forms to forge links between both worlds; under Lieutenant Yoji Itami’s guidance is one formed with special forces certification and who views their purpose in life as enjoying themselves.

Ginza is under attack from an enormous army of mythological creatures and ancient soldiers, but Itami and his team arrive just in time to fend them off and are soon commended for their heroic efforts by being promoted as first lieutenants, while Lelei, Tuka, and Rory receive training opportunities with the JSDF as soldiers.

Four months later, the JSDF had established its base at Alnus Hill and Itami was trying to earn the trust of people from another world. Though their challenges proved formidable, Itami and his team eventually prevailed despite them all, even helping Princess Pina Co Lada save her village from an ancient dragon and an army of marauders.
