Coco Gauff is having a great time in Grand Slam tournaments

Teenager Coco Gauff created a new record recently by becoming the first American woman in 30 years to reach the third round in her first three majors.

She overcame the experienced Sorana Cirstea with a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 comeback win in the Australian Open, to cruise into her third successive Grand Slam third-round appearance.

What makes the occasion more special is the fact that she is just 15 years and no other woman’s player from her country has ever achieved this feat in the past 30 years.

Gauff will next meet defending champion Naomi Osaka of Japan in the next round this coming Friday. The teenager’s last meeting with the Japanese did not end well, as she lost 6-3, 6-0 to World No.4 in the third round of the US Open last year.

Record-breaking teen

Before attaining this historic feat, the teenage sensation had also entered the fourth round of 2019 Wimbledon, which to date remains her highest ever Grand Slam achievement.

She took the limelight at the grass-court event earlier, by surpassing several higher-ranked opponents, only to succumb to a defeat at the hands of eventual champion Simona Halep.

Currently ranked 66, Gauf also holds the record for being the youngest ever player in the top-100 rankings by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).

The American rose to prominence in recent times with a first-round upset of Venus Williams in the 2019 Wimbledon.

She did the same by defeating her idol and fellow countrymate at the ongoing Australian Open during the first-round tie.

Gauff won her first WTA singles title at the 2019 Linz Open at the age of 15, making her the youngest singles title-holder on the WTA Tour since 2004, adding another feather to her crown of honours.
