Tragic news has shaken the cycling world as Swiss cyclist Gino Mader passed away at the age of 26 following a devastating crash during the Tour de Suisse’s fifth stage. Mader, a member of the Bahrain Victorious team, collided at high speed with American rider Magnus Sheffield while descending the Albula Pass towards La Punt, where the stage concluded.
The severity of the accident left Mader motionless in a ravine, submerged in water. However, he was resuscitated on Thursday and promptly airlifted to a hospital in Chur. Despite the efforts made to save his life, Mader succumbed to his injuries on Friday, as confirmed by Bahrain Victorious in a solemn statement.
Mader had been a prominent figure in Swiss cycling, earning victories in stages of the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de Suisse. In addition, he achieved a commendable fifth place in the general classification of the Vuelta a España two years ago, securing the prestigious young rider classification in the process.
Recognized for his talent and admired by fellow cyclists, Mader displayed his dedication to a greater cause last year. He pledged to donate one Swiss franc ($1.12) for every rider who finished behind him in races throughout 2022, contributing to the fight against the pressing climate crisis.
Another rider involved in the crash, Magnus Sheffield, also suffered injuries. He endured a concussion and bruises and received medical treatment at a local hospital, according to race organizers.
The stage route faced criticism from world champion Remco Evenepoel, who expressed concerns about the dangerous descent. Evenepoel stated that while a summit finish was possible, it was an unwise decision to allow the race to conclude with such a perilous descent. He called on riders to consider the risks involved in mountain descents.
