Why Kieran Tierney will be a brilliant fit for Unai Emery’s Arsenal?
According to a report from the Scottish Sun, Arsenal are plotting a staggering £25million summer swoop for Celtic star Kieran Tierney.
The Scotland international, 21, is one of the most exciting young left-backs in Europe and he has enjoyed another good season with Celtic. At such a tender age, Kieran Tierney has won seven major honours with Celtic and his performances over the last couple of years haven’t gone unnoticed, with Arsenal keeping tabs on him.
The Gunners were unable to spend any money on permanent transfers in January, but Unai Emery is likely to be backed in the summer for reinforcements. And it is clear where Emery needs to make improvements most importantly.
Arsenal’s defensive record this term is the worst in the Premier League’s top six. They have conceded 37 goals in 27 matches in 2018-19 and have been plagued by fitness problems, with Rob Holding and Hector Bellerin both suffering season-ending injuries. While signing a central defender should be prioritised, Emery must not forget bolstering his left-back options as well.
With Nacho Monreal’s injury problems, his age, and the fact he’s out of contract at the end of the season, there’s no better time for Emery than the summer transfer window to invest on a new left-back. To put things into perspective, the Gunners should go all out to land Kieran Tierney.
Leicester City announced on Tuesday the signing of Brendan Rodgers as their new manager which has devastated the Parkhead faithful. Hence, losing Tierney at the end of this campaign would be a massive blow for the Hoops and the club will certainly do everything to keep hold of their academy graduate.
As Tierney is contracted at Parkhead until 2023, it would take a huge offer for Arsenal to prise him away to the Emirates. And if they manage to get the deal over the line, it would represent a massive coup for Emery and company.
In the young Scotsman, Emery would a get a modern-day full-back who knows to strike a balance between his attacking endeavours and defensive duties. His biggest strength is his passing and pace, but he’s also a fantastic dribbler, crosser and he holds onto the ball really well. Tierney’s versatility makes him such a vital player to have in the squad as he’s capable of playing in central defence and as a right-back as well when required.
With Brendan Rodgers leaving Parkhead midway through the season, Tierney could also be tempted to move to the Premier League if Arsenal come up with a big-money offer in the summer.
Given his potential and profile, Tierney would solve the Gunners’ left-back woes at least for a decade.
