Why Liverpool should add more depth to their squad by signing Adrien Rabiot

According to The Express, Liverpool have contacted Paris Saint-Germain star Adrien Rabiot and have held discussions with his agent over a potential move to Anfield in January. The talented midfielder has also attracted interest from Barcelona and AC Milan and the latter leads the race to pen his signature in the coming days (The Express).

The 23-year-old midfielder, who was left out of France’s World Cup squad, wants a hike in his weekly wages and more regular minutes at PSG (h/t The Express). However, his current contract is set to expire next year and it is the ideal time for the big European clubs to persuade the player to shift bases.

Rabiot made a lot of noise in France when he burst onto the scene in 2012 for PSG. Since then, he has lived up to his potential. He is endowed with prodigious talent and the Frenchman has made a total of 208 appearances for his current club across all competitions, netting 22 times. Although he is just 23, he already has a lot of experience under his belt.

Liverpool have spent big this summer and almost all of Klopp’s new signings have hit the ground running in the ongoing campaign as the Reds boast of a perfect record. The German boss has rarely flopped with his signings in his managerial career and has changed Liverpool with new reinforcements.

While Naby Keita, Alisson Becker and Virgil Van Dijk have all fitted into Klopp’s system, Fabinho is yet to make his first appearance.

However, Liverpool should add more feathers to their cap. They can do so by signing the hugely talented French midfielder. The 23-year-old’s style of play is defined by dynamism, something that should perfectly suit Klopp’s philosophy.

Rabiot is capable of playing in a variety of roles in the central midfield. Standing at 6ft 2 in, with a lean and lanky physique, the Frenchman may not be capable of dominating the opposition with his physicality but he makes up for it with his technical superiority which allows him to pass the ball with grace and elegance.

While he tends to excel in a box-to-box role with his energy, tackling and interceptions, his wide range of passing helps him find attackers up front. In fact, his through balls and lobbed passes make him a great deep-lying playmaker.

He can also play either as a holding midfielder or as a shield for the rearguard, enabling the team to cope with counter-attacks.

With Adam Lallana injured and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain out of action with a season-long injury, Liverpool should bolster their midfield options by adding Adrien Rabiot to the squad. At the ripe age of 23, Rabiot already has a lot of experience and will only get better with regular game time. Jurgen Klopp’s men must perform well at all fronts and he needs proper depth in the squad to do so.
