Why Chelsea should make a move for Lyon striker Moussa Dembele
According to The Mirror, Chelsea are interested in signing Lyon star Moussa Dembele in the summer but will have to beat competition from Manchester United.
Moussa Dembele, 23, is one of France’s best young talents. He has scored 18 goals in 33 appearances for Lyon this season and is already close to matching last term’s haul of 20.
Lyon made it clear that their star striker was not for sale in January but he could be allowed to leave in the summer. The Ligue 1 outfit are holding out for £60m at the end of the season, the report adds.
Meanwhile, Chelsea failed to sign any players during the January transfer window unlike top-six rivals Tottenham, Manchester United, Wolves and Sheffield United. Despite not signing a player over the last two transfer windows and losing Eden Hazard, the Blues’ current position in the top four suggests that Lampard has done a commendable job this season.
Chelsea’s attack has performed well this term, with the young Tammy Abraham impressing while leading the line. Abraham has scored 13 goals in 24 league appearances but he hasn’t been challenged for a spot in the starting XI. Olivier Giroud has been frozen out and hasn’t got enough chances whereas Michy Batshuayi is yet to convince the manager to earn a spot in the starting XI.
With Lampard’s young stars putting in the hard work this season, one must not forget that the current Chelsea squad lacks experience, quality and depth in various areas. Hence, the Blues’ interest in Moussa Dembele is justified.
Dembele has been a prolific goalscorer for Lyon since arriving from Celtic in 2018. He has netted 27 goals in 54 Ligue 1 appearances. Prior his move to Lyon, the Frenchman scored 51 goals in 94 appearances across all competitions during his three-year spell with Celtic. Not to forget, the 23-year-old also has previous experience of playing in England with Fulham, where he netted 19 goals in 64 games.

Truly, Dembele has established himself as one the most fearful strikers across Europe and his solid goalscoring record at the highest level speaks volumes of his ability to destroy any defence line. The former France Under-21 international would bring a lot of quality to Lampard’s attack, whilst adding competition for Abraham.
Verdict
The Pontoise-born star has proven himself in the Ligue 1 and Chelsea should attempt to sign Dembele in a bid to strengthen their attack ahead of the 2020/21 season.
