Why Newcastle United need Andreas Samaris to help their survival chances

As it seems, Newcastle United need another midfielder, especially given the fact that they have only Isaac Hayden and Sean Longstaff fit. The others, which include Jonjo Shelvey, Mohamed Diame, and Ki-Sung Yueng have all been ruled out for a considerable amount of time. Diame might come back into action very soon but the shortage is still there.

That being said, the Daily Mail has reported that the Magpies have entered the race for Benfica star Andreas Samaris, with an idea to bring him in before deadline day.

The 29-year old’s contract with the Portuguese side expires at the end of the current season, which does allow Newcastle to get their man at a cut-price fee. That combined with Samaris’ abilities make him a great addition to  Rafael Benitez’s side. A defensive midfielder by trade, the 29-year-old is a very physical and aggressive player, which makes him a perfect match for the Premier League.

Furthermore, he can play as a centre-midfielder or as a centre-back if required. For Newcastle, this versatility will come into play on more than one occasion. It’s his defensive contributions from midfield that will be more than useful. A calm and composed defensive midfielder, Samaris can also find a teammate from anywhere and create forward moves.

However, what could prove to be a roadblock in the deal is the fact that Newcastle United are a mere two points above the relegation zone. While that will take some convincing, if there is one manager that can convince Andrea Samaris to join Newcastle United, it’s Rafael Benitez.

The move makes sense for both sides but also for Isaac Hayden, as Sky Sports has revealed that the former Arsenal star does want a move away. That would leave a spot open which Samaris could effectively fill and given his natural born abilities, the 29-year-old will thrive in the Premier League. His excellent work-rate and his defensive acumen which the Magpies desperately need in their team.

However, given their financial issues and managerial uncertainties, there is a chance that Newcastle United won’t have the money to complete the deal. But if they can convince Benfica to agree to a cut-rate deal for a player, who has less than six months left on his contract, then it would be something worthy.
